ZEL WILSON

My work is deeply inspired by a desire to help others see the beauty and spirit of the animal world. I am passionate about hand-built ceramics and throwing pottery as my chosen mediums because they allow me to create organic, tactile representations that bring out the raw elegance of nature. I am particularly fond of making functional pieces with sculptural aspects, as well as using natural found elements, like wild clay, to bring my pieces even closer to the Earth. Humans have a tendency to anthropomorphize animals, plants, and items. Working to bridge the gap between this and replication, personality is infused into my pieces. Inspiring my hands to create stories through the clay, I bring up the past, the present, and the future. Through my work, I hope to foster a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the animals that inhabit, or had inhabited it.

After discovering wild clay in my backyard, this led me to desire to represent the creatures that used to call this place home, creatures like trilobites and nautiloids. Each set at the table represents a different era during the paleozoic era and the centerpiece includes one of Missouri's two discovered dinosaurs.
