Romana Camacho Murillo

Double Major - BA Studio Art and BA Advertising & Marketing Communications; Minor in French

My artwork consists mainly of drawing people and characters, especially women. Women's bodies are beautiful and I love drawing curves and organic shapes, but I am also interested in bringing to light the struggles that women have to face daily and throughout their lives. The way women are presented and treated follows a long complex history of oppression by men. One of my favorite quotes comes from feminist Simone de Beauvoir who said, “One is not born, but rather becomes a woman”. From the moment a baby is declared to be a girl, society shapes her from every angle, telling her how to be and what to wear. I also have an interest in showing the sense of wonder and innocence in my work.

I consider my work as illustration. I try to create characters and be able to tell stories with them. My favorite art tool will always be the pencil because of its simplicity, availability and easy way to use, but I am trying to start using color and digital painting to further develop my skills as an artist.

My inspiration comes from multiple artists that I follow on instagram. My favorites are Olga Andriyenko (AsuROCKS), Pernille Ørum, Qing Han (qinniart), Aveline Stokart, Liana Hee, Gretel Lusky and Hadadeincognito. I look up to these artists because they are able to create beautiful characters and have a strong skill in using narrative and color. On the fine arts side I also find inspiration in the work of Barbara Kruger, Kara Walker, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
